Varietals Planted: Nebbiolo

Bottling: Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne

Vineyard description:

Baudana is named after the hamlet that sits at the top of the vineyard area in the commune of Serralunga. The commune of Serralunga is known for producing Barolo of depth, austerity and complexity, capable of ageing for decades in great vintages. Serralunga is the commune from which arguably the most famous of all Barolo springs: the Monfortino of Giacomo Conterno. Baudana sits toward the northern end of the commune, a bit lower in altitude, and produces wines of steely austerity and power.

The Baudana site currently is only partially planted and divided into two parcels. The upper parcel is near the town, flatter with a gentle west-south exposure. This parcel has 35-40 year old vines planted on it and this fruit will be included in the 2011 Le Vigne. We expect that this fruit will add to the complexity and ageability of this bottling.

The lower parcel is hourglass-shaped with perfect south exposure, steep and well- drained. This parcel has a few vines on it, a small fruit orchard and pasture. It will require extensive drainage work before being planted, hopefully by the spring of 2012. This parcel has the potential to be a truly great site - it is strange that the previous owners never planted it completely to vines. Luciano expects this parcel to be the source of some of his finest fruit for the Le Vigne bottling.

The Baudana vineyard was acquired in direct purchase in the spring of 2011. It will take several years to fully realize the potential of this site and for the newly-planted vines on the lower parcel to mature. By the time the vineyard reaches full production it will help make the Le Vigne Barolo an even more powerful and long-lived wine.
